Braille can be directly transcribed onto paper using a typewriter-like machine known as Perkins braillewriter. There is still a great need for volunteers who are trained in braille.
We are also qualified to teach the braille code and prepare people for the Library of Congress National Literary Braille Competency Test. We'll teach you to read braille so you can use those skills volunteering with us.
For those sighted people who have not learned to read braille, but would like to donate their time, MBVOL has computer programs available that do the transcribing for the user.
It's a good feeling knowing we're filling a great need among the blind community. We all get a great deal of satisfaction putting knowledge at their fingertips. If you think you might be interested in volunteering, call us today! Most of the work has no physical requirements and we have an ongoing need for willing hands to make thermoformed copies, bind, package and ship the braille volumes. We will train you on these easy to learn tasks.
